Generic RPG Advice

Generic RPG advice is a dime a dozen these days, but here is one regarding rules.

Ask yourself 3 things: Does a rule serve the story? Does it serve the character? Does it serve the game?

If no to all three, the answer is generally it's not worth worrying about. Obviously the part that needs unpacking is what those 3 things actually are (story, character, game).

If any of you currently game or want to play with me, let me add -- I also see RPGs as a very low risk place to try out ideas... like a sketchpad. The bar is best set low. In theory, low expectations can have a chilling effect on creativity, but I’ve found it’s more often the other way around… as it also produces the freedom to fail.
